Modern Romance - Book Notes

The book focuses on how to start, and maintain a relationship in the modern era, and how to find the right mate for you.

🚀 The Book in 3 Sentences

  1. The Book explores the modern-day mishaps and successes that come with online dating and modern romance.

  2. The Book talks about how we as a society need to view online dating as treating them as actual people rather than bubbles on a screen.

  3. The book also focuses on how to start and maintain a relationship in the modern era, and how to find the right mate for you.

🎨 Impressions

I really liked the book. Even though it was written in 2014, a lot of the information still holds true today about hook-up culture, the online dating scene, people not settling early, the fear of not finding the perfect one, and much more. I think Aziz does a really good job of exploring all these topics in a very fun and unique way by adding his own comedy twist to it. He also backs up everything he is saying with personal stories and facts from online journals and such.

How I Discovered It

I found out about the book back when I was in high school, but I didn’t really read it until I was gifted it.

Who Should Read It?

I think any young individuals in their 20s or 30s should read this whether they are in a relationship or not. I think this book shows the beauty of dating in the modern time, and also some of the downfalls that come with it.

☘️ How the Book Changed Me

💡 How my life / behaviour / thoughts / ideas have changed as a result of reading the book.

  • My life has changed because it shows me that just because there are a lot of options out there for dating, it doesn’t mean they are the ones for you.

  • This book has definitely made me more conscious of the fact that seeing other options is very easy in our society, and that sometimes we fall into a trap of not valuing what we have at the moment.

  • I think this book also gave me a good sense of how hard the online dating culture can be especially if you’re not investing time into the people, and you are more focused on the matches or swipes you can get. I think it’s made me appreciate my relationship more because finding someone who thinks exactly like you and likes everything you do is rare, but connecting with them on a deeper level regardless of their differences is the fun part of relationships.

✍️ My Top 3 Quotes

  • “We were consistently choosing to meet as many people as possible instead of investing in a relationship”

  • “We are now comparing our potential partners not to other potential partners but rather to an idealized person whom no one could measure to?”

  • “Online dating works best as a forum where you can meet people whom you’d never otherwise be able to meet - the key is to get off the screen and meet these people.”
